Time period:
The time period is around 1830. I know this because of the different events and things that are happening plus the dialect. A few of these things is there are still slaves in america and it is still a regular thing at this time, people believe different things then now about God and witches and such, and the way people talk the dialect is much different.
Perspective:
The perspective is from a 12 year old boy so it is going to be exaggerated. When he says he is laying in the grass forever could have been 30 sec or talking about all the action and murder and everything he is doing that could all be more exaggerated then what actually happened. He probably wants there to be more action in his life because that's “more fun” so he pretends and describes it as there being more and more intense and such. all Toms stories have been lies.

Three things that would give a guy in this day and age in the same senario are the actual look of a guy vs a girl, there atoms apple, and lastly the voice of a guy is much different. If this was switched as in a girl pretending to be a guy it would be much of the same stuff, the look of a guy vs a girl, they would have no atoms apple, and a girls voice is usually much higher and it would be hard to fake the voice.
